|God in His merciful wisdom, called home our loved one, Mrs. Helen Leigh Batts, age 80, of 1800 Ferndale Avenue, Petersburg, Va., on Friday, May 31, 2013 at her residence.
She was born on May 23, 1933 in Dinwiddie County, Va., to the late Alfred and Helen Walker. Helen was baptized at an early age at Sharon Baptist Church, Petersburg, Va. She was a dedicated member and served faithfully until her health declined. She served diligently on the Usher Ministry for many years. She was a dedicated member of the Daisy Rivers Goodwill Memorial Ministry. In 2010, she became an honorary member of that ministry.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Wilford Batts; a daughter JoAnne and five siblings, Emma, Leonard, Alfred Jr., James and Charlie Walker.
She is survived by her loving, devoted son, Wayne Batts (Lisa who was also a very devoted caregiver) of Petersburg, Va., four precious grandchildren, Nakia of Charlotte, NC, Maurice, Necole and Wayne “Pop” all of Petersburg, Va.; four great grandchildren, Ma’lasia and Maurie both of Petersburg, Va., and Alexus and Marquis of Charlotte, NC.; three sisters, Geraldine Evans, and Virginia Spriggs both of Petersburg, Va., and Eva Price of Fairfax, Va., and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A homegoing service will be held 2:00 P.M., Friday, June 7, 2013 at Sharon Baptist Church, 26804 Fort Emory Road, Petersburg, Va., the Rev. Dr. Herbert W. Anderson, Pastor, Eulogist and Rev. Harold Farmer, officiating. The interment to follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park.
